Who Owns Toyota?

While Toyota is primarily known for producing sedans, trucks, and SUVs for the Massillon roads, the original company was founded in 1926 to produce automatic looms. The engineers at the then-named Toyota Automatic Loom Works began experimenting with building their own motors, starting with bike motors and upgrading to full car engine prototypes by the early 1930s. With several promising prototypes for passenger vehicles in hand, the Toyota Automatic Loom Works established a separate division, Toyota Motor Corporation, to begin its journey into the automotive market.

Since its founding in 1937, Toyota Motor Corporation has thrived and expanded into the international automaker it is today. Unlike many of its competitors, Toyota has maintained singular ownership over its brand, with its success allowing it to hold stakes in other popular automakers such as Subaru and Mazda. With the introduction of its luxury Lexus brand in the 1980s, Toyota has continued to diversify its offerings to ensure it remains a powerhouse in the industry.
