What Does TPMS Mean?

TPMS Sensors

If you’re driving through Akron or Massillon and you see a light in your instrument cluster that says “TPMS” or looks like a flat tire, do you know what to do? The light indicates that your tire pressure monitoring system—TPMS for short—has detected low air pressure in at least one of your tires. Most new Toyotas feature TPMS. The service department at Toyota of North Canton has information about what to do if you see this light, and why tire maintenance is so important.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Features

Your car’s tire pressure monitoring system exists to keep you safe on Canton streets if you have an under-inflated tire. It might not seem like an under-inflated tire is a big problem, but it can lead to issues you definitely don’t want to experience that include:

  • Poor traction
  • Decreased load-carrying capability
  • A flat tire or blowout
  • Poor fuel economy

Short-term, proper tire inflation can protect you from a potential accident, and in the long run, it can prevent your tires from wearing out prematurely and even optimize fuel economy.

Proper Tire Inflation

Both over- and under-inflation of tires can lead to a host of unwanted issues for drivers. A properly inflated tire will:

  • Reduce tread movement, increasing the life of the tire
  • Reduce rolling resistance which will increase vehicle efficiency
  • Increase water dispersion which decreases the likelihood of hydroplaning

Your owner’s manual will tell you the right tire pressure for your vehicle. It’s measured in pounds per square inch (psi). Your TPMS is great for letting you know when your tire pressure is below the recommended measurement. Checking your tire pressure monthly is also a good idea so you can catch potential problems even sooner. It’s easy to add air to your tires at most gas stations. Or, if you just need to add a small amount, a bike tire pump will do the trick.
